Remove less relevant results from search

Why some results appear before others?

Not all matches carry the same importance.

For example, when someone searches for sugar, different products may match the term in different parts of their data. Such as:

Highly relevant match:

  • Brown Sugar - the term appears directly in the product name.

  • Baking Sugar & Sweeteners - the term appears in a category hierachy.

Less relevant match:

  • Strawberry Yogurt - the description may mention “contains natural sugar,” but the product itself is not primarily about sugar.

  • Chocolate Bar - the nutritional information may list sugar, but it's not a key identifying feature.

When search results are shown using the default sorting method (popularity), items with stronger indications of relevance - which clearly reflect what the customer is searching for - naturally appear at the top. Other products that match the query in broader context are still included - just lower in the list - to support product discovery and provide a complete search experience.

Customizing what counts as “Relevant”

If your catalog includes additional structured fields that are important for your business, we can configure search to treat those fields as higher priority.

Option to show only the most relevant items

We offer the option to hide items with low relevance by default. If you choose this setting, search will show only the most relevant results when they are available. Less relevant items will appear only if no stronger matches are found.
